Feeling brave (or stupid) we headed for the Stratosphere, a hotel/casino with a signature attraction of the 350m (1149 feet) Stratosphere Tower. At the top of the tower there is an observation deck and three thrill rides. Throwing caution (and our lives) to the wind, we bought tickets for all three.
First up Big Shot, the world's tallest thrill ride (because it sits on top of the tower). This ride shoots you straight up 50m (160 feet) at 73kph (45 mph) (over 4 Gs) until you are 330m (1,081 feet) above the Strip. No problem with this one.
Next up, X-Screama, giant see-saw that propels you 8m (27 feet) over the edge of the Tower, 264m (866 feet) above the ground. Insert a long list of expletives here. Without a doubt the most terrifying ride we've ever done (and we've done some doosies!). We scored the front seats (yay!), something we really didn't want. Think of a see-saw with a rollercoaster car on it. You start a the lower end, no problem. The high end then drops propelling you towards the end of the track which extends out from the Tower. You are left dangling at the end of the track high above the ground. It then drops you a few more metres just for good mesaure. It does this not once, not twice, but three times! Needless to say, legs were like jelly when we got off.
After composing ourselves it was time for the last one, Insanity, the Ride. This is a massive mechanical arm that extends 20m (64 feet) over the edge of the Tower and spins you at a force of 3 Gs. Maybe we should have been scared, but after X-Screama, this was a piece of cake. Time for a lie down.
